Linuxが25周年を迎えました。


Linuxがリリースされたのは、1991年8月25日のことです。
Linus Torvalds氏が21歳の時です。
氏は「comp.os.minix」ニュースグループに、以下のアナウンスを行いました。

Hello everybody out there using minix -

I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and
professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones.  This has been brewing
since april, and is starting to get ready.  I'd like any feedback on
things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat
(same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons)
among other things).

I've currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work.
This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, and
I'd like to know what features most people would want.  Any suggestions
are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them :-)

PS.  Yes - it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs.
It is NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never
will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(.

日本では平成3年ですね。
25年前というと、まだ生まれていない方、子供や学生だった方、あるいはあの頃は若かったと振り返られる方がいらっしゃるのではないでしょうか。

「MS-DOS 5.0」や「Windows 3.0 日本語版」の発売日が1991年です。
Intel CPUに目を向けると、「i486DX 50MHz」や「i486SX 16/20/25Mhz」が発売された年です。

かつては国民機と呼ばれていたNECの「PC-9801」シリーズが発売されていた年でもあり、HDD（40GB/80GB）はSASIで接続され、定価が30万から70万していた時代です。
